폭풍 아래의 마을

폴리에게는 적어 둔 장소가 하나 있었지만 그곳이 어디인지는 알지 못했다. "거기 어떻게 가는지 알려 주시겠어요?" 아침을 먹으며 암양에게 물었다. 해안 도로를 따라 서쪽으로, 땅이 언덕이 있는 척하기를 그만둘 때까지 가라고 암양이 말했다. 스카일 만은 창백한 모래가 길게 휘어진 곳이고 그 뒤로 초록빛 단이 있는데, 마을은 바로 그 단 위에 지붕을 하늘로 열어 둔 채 땅속에 반쯤 잠겨 앉아 있다.

Polly had one place written down and no idea where it was. "Can you tell me how to get there?" she asked the ewe over breakfast. Follow the coast road west, the ewe said, until the land stops pretending to have hills. The Bay of Skaill is a long curve of pale sand with a green shelf behind it, and the shelf is where the village sits, half sunk into the ground with its roofs open to the sky.

An oystercatcher was working the site that morning, and oystercatchers can be heard in weather. Polly asked, "I would like to know the history of this particular monument." People lived here about five thousand years ago, he told her. They were farming this coast before Stonehenge and before the Great Pyramid. Then the sand came over the top of them and stayed for roughly four thousand years, until a storm in the winter of eighteen fifty stripped the dune away.

The wind took half of that, so Polly asked for it again. "Could you please repeat that for me?" The second telling had the detail that matters. Every house holds the same furniture in the same arrangement: a hearth in the middle, box beds at either side, and against the far wall a stone dresser facing the door. It is stone because there was no wood.

"박물관이 내일 문을 여는지 알려 주시겠어요?" 폴리는 이미 다시 오리라는 것을 알면서 물었다. 그리고 지붕이 열린 집 한 채의 가장자리에 서서 한동안 안을 들여다보았다. 누구나 방을 꾸미는 방식 그대로 꾸며진 방이었다. 좋은 물건은 손님이 가장 먼저 보게 되는 자리에 놓여 있었다.

"Could you tell me if the museum is open tomorrow?" Polly asked, already knowing she would come back. She stood a while at the edge of one open house, looking in at a room laid out the way anyone lays out a room, the good things where a visitor would see them first.
