절벽에서 발견된, 아무도 이름 붙이지 않았던 두 생물

과학자들이 지금까지 한 번도 이름 붙여진 적 없는 동물 두 종을 확인했다. 몬테네그로 산악 지대에서 석회암 절벽을 샅샅이 훑던 연구자들이 아주 작은 달팽이 두 마리를 발견했는데, 조사해 보니 이것들은 과학계에 처음 보고되는 새로운 종으로 드러났다.

Scientists have identified two animals never before named. In the mountains of Montenegro, researchers combing limestone cliffs came across two minuscule snails that turned out, on inspection, to be new to science.

달팽이 한 마리의 크기는 대략 손톱 너비 정도이며, 바위의 좁은 틈에 몸을 끼워 넣고 살아가기에 알맞은 작은 원뿔 모양 껍데기를 지니고 있다. 단순한 덮개 대신, 각 개체의 꼬리에는 작은 문처럼 기능하는 둥근 원반이 달려 있어서, 몸이 안으로 들어가는 즉시 껍데기를 꽉 막아 준다. 두 종 가운데 하나는 오직 하나의 좁은 협곡 안에서만 살아가는데, 계획된 댐이 건설되면 연구자들이 그 절벽에 눈에 띄지 않게 살고 있는 다른 생물들을 미처 다 파악하기도 전에 이 협곡이 물에 잠길 수 있다.

Each snail measures roughly the width of a fingernail and carries a small, cone-shaped shell built for a life spent wedged into narrow cracks in the rock. Rather than a simple flap, each one has a round disk on its tail that functions like a tiny door, sealing the shell shut the instant the animal withdraws inside. One of the two species survives only within a single narrow canyon that a planned dam could submerge before researchers finish cataloguing whatever else lives there, unseen, on the same cliffs.

연구팀은 이 두 달팽이에게 각각 발견된 장소의 이름을 붙였다. 하나는 그 협곡의 이름을, 다른 하나는 근처의 높은 고원 이름을 따서 지었다. 연구자들은 이번 발견이, 이미 잘 조사된 유럽의 한구석에서조차 여전히 이름 없는 종 전체가 단 하나의 절벽 위에서 발견되기를 기다리고 있을 수 있다는 사실을 보여 준다고 말한다.

The team named the two snails after the very places where they were found: one after the canyon itself, the other after a nearby high plateau. Researchers note that the discovery shows how, even in well-mapped corners of Europe, whole species can still be waiting, unnamed, on a single cliff face.
