Carla si era tagliata la mano lavando i piatti. Non era profondo, ma continuava a sanguinare, così andò all'ambulatorio. La receptionist le chiese la tessera sanitaria e le diede un numero. Quarantasette.
Lo schermo sopra la porta diceva «In corso: 31». La sala d'attesa era piena. Un uomo leggeva la stessa pagina di una rivista da dieci minuti. Un giovane padre teneva in braccio un bambino addormentato. Un adolescente fissava il suo telefono.
Carla si sedette e guardò i numeri cambiare. 32. 33. 36. I numeri non avanzavano in ordine. Si chiese se l'avessero dimenticata.
Dopo un'ora, lo schermo mostrò finalmente il 47. Attraversò la porta del piccolo ambulatorio. Il medico le guardò la mano per due minuti. «Non è niente», disse. «La pulisca due volte al giorno. Senza punti.»
Quando uscì, la sala d'attesa era quasi vuota. L'adolescente se n'era andato. Il bambino era sveglio. L'uomo aveva finalmente girato pagina.
