Carla megsértette a kezét mosogatás közben. Nem volt mély a seb, de folyton vérzett, ezért elment a rendelőintézetbe. A recepciós kérte a biztosítási kártyáját, és adott neki egy sorszámot. Negyvenhetet.
Az ajtó feletti kijelző ezt mutatta: "Most következik: 31." A váróterem zsúfolásig tele volt. Egy férfi már tíz perce ugyanazt az oldalt olvasta egy újságban. Egy fiatal apa alvó babát tartott a karjában. Egy tinédzser a telefonjába meredt.
Carla leült és figyelte, ahogy változnak a számok. 32. 33. 36. A számok nem sorrendben követték egymást. Azon töprengett, vajon elfelejtették-e őt.
Egy óra múlva végre megjelent a kijelzőn a 47-es. Átment az ajtón a kis orvosi szobába. Az orvos két percig nézte a kezét. "Semmi baj" - mondta. "Naponta kétszer tisztítsa meg. Nem kell varrat."
Amikor távozott, a váróterem már majdnem üres volt. A tinédzser eltűnt. A baba ébren volt. A férfi végre lapozott egyet az újságban.
