四十七番

カーラは皿洗いをしていて手を切ってしまった。深い傷ではなかったが、血が止まらないので診療所に行った。受付の人が保険証を求め、番号札をくれた。四十七番だった。

Carla had cut her hand washing the dishes. It wasn't deep, but it kept bleeding, so she went to the clinic. The receptionist asked for her insurance card and gave her a number. Forty-seven.

ドアの上のスクリーンには「現在診察中：三十一番」と表示されていた。待合室は人でいっぱいだった。一人の男性が十分間も雑誌の同じページを読んでいる。若い父親が眠っている赤ちゃんを抱いている。十代の男の子がスマートフォンを見つめている。

The screen above the door said "Now serving: 31." The waiting room was full. A man was reading the same page of a magazine for ten minutes. A young father was holding a sleeping baby. A teenager was staring at his phone.

カーラは座って番号が変わるのを見ていた。三十二番。三十三番。三十六番。番号は順番通りに進まない。自分のことが忘れられているのではないかと心配になった。

Carla sat down and watched the numbers change. 32. 33. 36. The numbers did not move in order. She wondered if she had been forgotten.

一時間後、ついにスクリーンに四十七番が表示された。彼女は小さな診察室のドアを通って入った。医師は二分間彼女の手を見た。「大したことありませんね」と医師は言った。「一日二回きれいにしてください。縫合の必要はありません。」

After an hour, the screen finally showed 47. She walked through the door to the small office. The doctor looked at her hand for two minutes. "It's nothing," he said. "Clean it twice a day. No stitches."

彼女が出てきたとき、待合室はほとんど空になっていた。十代の男の子はもういなかった。赤ちゃんは起きていた。男性はやっとページをめくっていた。

When she left, the waiting room was almost empty. The teenager was gone. The baby was awake. The man had finally turned the page.
