Am zweiten Morgen brachte Chiara ein Glas zu Pastas Becken. Das Glas hatte einen Schraubdeckel. Drinnen war eine lebende Krabbe.
Chiara ließ das Glas ins Wasser fallen. Es sank langsam. Pasta machte keinen Sprung.
Polly saß auf dem Rand. Die Krabbe bewegte sich im Glas. Pasta berührte das Glas mit einem Arm. Ihre Arme können schmecken, was sie berühren.
Pasta nahm das Glas mit zwei Armen. Sie drehte es langsam. Ein dritter Arm arbeitete am Deckel.
Oktopusse können Schraubgläser öffnen. Sie machen das in Laboren seit den 1950er Jahren. Sie fühlen die Gewinde mit ihren Saugnäpfen. Dann drehen sie den Deckel.
Pasta drehte den Deckel. Er sprang ab. Die Krabbe versuchte zu entkommen. Aber Pastas vierter Arm wartete schon. Die Krabbe war verschwunden.
Chiara schrieb auf ihrem Klemmbrett. "Drei Minuten. Sie wird schneller."
Oktopusse sind sehr seltsam. Sie haben drei Herzen. Ihr Blut ist blau. Sie leben nur drei bis fünf Jahre. Pasta war schon zwei Jahre alt.
Sie würde alles lernen, was sie je wissen würde, in der Zeit, die ihr noch blieb.
