Op de tweede ochtend bracht Chiara een pot naar Pasta's aquarium. De pot had een schroefdeksel. Binnenin zat een levende krab.
Chiara liet de pot in het water vallen. Hij zonk langzaam. Pasta maakte geen plotselinge beweging.
Polly zat op de rand. De krab bewoog binnenin de pot. Pasta raakte de pot aan met één arm. Haar armen kunnen proeven wat ze aanraken.
Pasta pakte de pot met twee armen. Ze draaide hem langzaam. Een derde arm werkte aan het deksel.
Octopussen kunnen potten met schroefdeksels openen. Ze doen dit al in laboratoria sinds de jaren vijftig. Ze voelen de schroefdraad met hun zuignappen. Daarna draaien ze het deksel.
Pasta draaide het deksel. Het sprong eraf. De krab probeerde te ontsnappen. Maar Pasta's vierde arm wachtte al. De krab was verdwenen.
Chiara schreef op haar klembord. "Drie minuten. Ze wordt snel."
Octopussen zijn heel vreemd. Ze hebben drie harten. Hun bloed is blauw. Ze leven slechts drie tot vijf jaar. Pasta was al twee.
Ze zou alles leren wat ze ooit zou weten in de tijd die ze nog had.
