Polly dachte zwei Tage lang über den Wanderfalken nach. Sie wollte das Gefühl seines Sturzflugs erleben.
Am dritten Morgen ging sie zu El Capitan. Ein Wanderfalke saß auf einem hohen Felsen. Er fraß etwas.
Sie setzte sich auf einen Busch in fünfzig Metern Entfernung. Sie wartete.
Der Falke beendete seine Mahlzeit. Er schaute zu ihr herüber. Dann trat er vom Felsen.
Er schlug nicht mit den Flügeln. Er legte sie eng an. Er stürzte schnell hinab. Er fing sich ab, drehte sich und war verschwunden.
Ein Wanderfalke kann mit 380 Kilometern pro Stunde stürzen. Er ist das schnellste Tier der Welt. Der Vogel hat ein spezielles drittes Augenlid. Außerdem hat er kleine Kegel in der Nase, um die Luft zu verlangsamen.
Polly ist nicht für diesen Sturzflug gemacht. Aber sie wollte es versuchen.
Sie flog zu dem hohen Felsen. Sie legte ihre Flügel an. Sie fiel.
Es war kein guter Sturzflug. Sie schwankte. Der Wind erfasste ihre Flügel. Sie öffnete ihre Flügel und fing sich ab.
Sie versuchte es erneut von niedriger. Dann noch einmal, noch niedriger. Bis zum Mittag hatte sie es achtmal versucht. Jeder Versuch war ein wenig besser.
