Polly pensou no falcão-peregrino por dois dias. Ela queria sentir a forma do seu mergulho.

Polly thought about the peregrine for two days. She wanted to feel the shape of its dive.

Na terceira manhã, ela foi até El Capitan. Um falcão-peregrino estava em uma rocha alta. Estava comendo alguma coisa.

On the third morning, she went to El Capitan. A peregrine was on a high rock. It was eating something.

Ela se acomodou em um arbusto a cinquenta metros de distância. Ela esperou.

She perched on a bush fifty metres away. She waited.

O falcão-peregrino terminou sua refeição. Olhou para ela. Então, saiu da rocha.

The peregrine finished its meal. It looked at her. Then it stepped off the rock.

Não bateu as asas. As dobrou bem apertadas. Caiu rápido. Desviou, virou e desapareceu.

It did not flap. It folded its wings tight. It dropped fast. It pulled out, turned, and was gone.

Um falcão-peregrino pode mergulhar a 380 quilômetros por hora. É o animal mais rápido do mundo. A ave tem uma terceira pálpebra especial. Também tem pequenos cones no nariz para desacelerar o ar.

A peregrine falcon can dive at 380 kilometres per hour. It is the fastest animal in the world. The bird has a special third eyelid. It also has small cones in its nose to slow the air.

Polly não foi feita para esse mergulho. Mas ela queria tentar.

Polly is not made for this dive. But she wanted to try.

Ela voou até a rocha alta. Dobrou suas asas. Caiu.

She flew to the high rock. She folded her wings. She fell.

Não foi um bom mergulho. Ela balançou. O vento pegou sua asa. Ela abriu as asas e desviou.

It was not a good dive. She wobbled. The wind caught her wing. She opened her wings and pulled out.

Ela tentou novamente de um ponto mais baixo. Depois, de novo, ainda mais baixo. Ao meio-dia, ela já tinha tentado oito vezes. Cada uma estava um pouco melhor.

She tried again from lower. Then again, lower still. By noon she had tried eight times. Each one was a little better.
