The Sequoia

Polly went to Mariposa Grove. It is full of giant sequoias. They are the biggest trees in the world.

पॉली मैरिपोसा ग्रोव गई। यह विशाल सिकोइया पेड़ों से भरा हुआ है। ये दुनिया के सबसे बड़े पेड़ हैं।

Sequoia bark is not brown. It is deep orange. Polly landed on a branch. She pecked the bark with her beak. It was soft. The bark was very thick. The thick bark protects the tree from fire.

सिकोइया की छाल भूरी नहीं होती। यह गहरे नारंगी रंग की होती है। पॉली एक शाखा पर उतरी। उसने अपनी चोंच से छाल को ठोका। यह नरम थी। छाल बहुत मोटी थी। मोटी छाल पेड़ को आग से बचाती है।

A family walked past. A little girl said, "Look, a parrot!" Her father said, "It is a toy." Polly did not move.

एक परिवार वहाँ से गुजरा। एक छोटी लड़की ने कहा, "देखो, एक तोता!" उसके पिता ने कहा, "यह एक खिलौना है।" पॉली ने कोई हरकत नहीं की।

She flew up the tree. At thirty metres up, the branches started. They were thick. She perched on one. The top of the tree was still far above.

वह पेड़ के ऊपर उड़ गई। तीस मीटर ऊपर, शाखाएँ शुरू हुईं। वे मोटी थीं। वह एक पर बैठ गई। पेड़ का शीर्ष अभी भी बहुत ऊपर था।

The biggest tree was called the Grizzly Giant. It was about 3,000 years old. Its trunk was wider than a bus.

सबसे बड़ा पेड़ ग्रिजली जायंट कहलाता था। यह लगभग 3,000 साल पुराना था। इसका तना एक बस से भी चौड़ा था।

Polly perched on the trunk. She looked up.

पॉली तने पर बैठ गई। उसने ऊपर की ओर देखा।

Three thousand years. The tree was already old when Rome was a small village.

तीन हजार साल। जब रोम एक छोटा गाँव था, तब यह पेड़ पहले से ही पुराना था।

Polly stayed a long time. There was an old fire mark on the trunk. The tree had survived many fires.

पॉली वहाँ बहुत देर तक रही। तने पर एक पुराना आग का निशान था। पेड़ ने कई आगों को झेला था।

A small seed fell past her. Sequoia seeds need fire to grow. The cones open only in heat. New trees grow after a burn.

एक छोटा बीज उसके पास से गिरा। सिकोइया के बीजों को बढ़ने के लिए आग की जरूरत होती है। शंकु केवल गर्मी में खुलते हैं। आग के बाद नए पेड़ उगते हैं।
