Una famiglia passò di lì. Una bambina disse: "Guarda, un pappagallo!" Suo padre disse: "È un giocattolo." Polly non si mosse.
Volò su per l'albero. A trenta metri di altezza, iniziavano i rami. Erano spessi. Si posò su uno di essi. La cima dell'albero era ancora molto lontana.
L'albero più grande si chiamava Grizzly Giant. Aveva circa 3.000 anni. Il suo tronco era più largo di un autobus.
Polly si posò sul tronco. Guardò in alto.
Tremila anni. L'albero era già vecchio quando Roma era un piccolo villaggio.
Polly rimase a lungo. C'era un vecchio segno di fuoco sul tronco. L'albero aveva sopravvissuto a molti incendi.
Un piccolo seme cadde accanto a lei. I semi di sequoia hanno bisogno del fuoco per crescere. Le pigne si aprono solo con il calore. Nuovi alberi crescono dopo un incendio.
