세쿼이아

폴리는 마리포사 그로브에 갔어요. 그곳은 거대한 세쿼이아 나무들로 가득 차 있었어요. 세쿼이아 나무는 세계에서 가장 큰 나무들이에요.

Polly went to Mariposa Grove. It is full of giant sequoias. They are the biggest trees in the world.

세쿼이아 나무의 껍질은 갈색이 아니에요. 깊은 주황색이에요. 폴리는 나뭇가지에 앉았어요. 부리로 껍질을 쪼아봤어요. 껍질은 부드러웠어요. 껍질이 아주 두꺼웠어요. 두꺼운 껍질은 나무를 불로부터 보호해줘요.

Sequoia bark is not brown. It is deep orange. Polly landed on a branch. She pecked the bark with her beak. It was soft. The bark was very thick. The thick bark protects the tree from fire.

한 가족이 지나갔어요. 작은 소녀가 "저기 봐, 앵무새야!"라고 말했어요. 그녀의 아버지는 "장난감이야."라고 말했어요. 폴리는 움직이지 않았어요.

A family walked past. A little girl said, "Look, a parrot!" Her father said, "It is a toy." Polly did not move.

폴리는 나무 위로 날아갔어요. 30미터 높이에서 가지들이 시작됐어요. 가지들은 두꺼웠어요. 폴리는 그 중 하나에 앉았어요. 나무 꼭대기는 여전히 멀리 위에 있었어요.

She flew up the tree. At thirty metres up, the branches started. They were thick. She perched on one. The top of the tree was still far above.

가장 큰 나무는 그리즐리 자이언트라고 불렸어요. 약 3,000년 된 나무였어요. 나무의 줄기는 버스보다 더 넓었어요.

The biggest tree was called the Grizzly Giant. It was about 3,000 years old. Its trunk was wider than a bus.

폴리는 줄기에 앉았어요. 위를 올려다봤어요.

Polly perched on the trunk. She looked up.

삼천 년. 로마가 작은 마을이었을 때 이 나무는 이미 오래된 나무였어요.

Three thousand years. The tree was already old when Rome was a small village.

폴리는 오래 머물렀어요. 줄기에는 오래된 불의 흔적이 있었어요. 나무는 많은 불을 견뎌냈어요.

Polly stayed a long time. There was an old fire mark on the trunk. The tree had survived many fires.

작은 씨앗이 그녀 옆으로 떨어졌어요. 세쿼이아 씨앗은 자라기 위해 불이 필요해요. 열이 있어야 솔방울이 열려요. 불이 난 후에 새 나무들이 자라요.

A small seed fell past her. Sequoia seeds need fire to grow. The cones open only in heat. New trees grow after a burn.
