霧が彼女のうしろで閉じる

最後の午後、ポリーはもう一度、海岸のはるか上へと昇っていった。茶の段々畑を越え、二つの湖を抱く火口を越え、月桂樹の奥からいまもプリオロの声が届く静かな森を越えて。そこから見下ろすと、島はまさにそのものの姿をしていた。長く連なった古い火山の鎖。まだかすかに温かく、まだゆっくりと冷えて緑になりつつある。

On her last afternoon, Polly climbed high above the coast one more time, above the tea terraces, the crater with its two lakes, and the quiet forest where the priolo still calls from deep in the laurel trees. From up there the island looked exactly like what it is: one long chain of old volcanoes, still faintly warm, still slowly cooling into green.

眼下では漁船が港へ戻りつつあり、暗くなっていく海に細い航跡を引く白い小さな影となっていた。海岸道路沿いには、明かりが一つ、また一つと灯りはじめる。岸辺のどこかから薪の煙のにおいが立ちのぼり、最後の潮の香りと混じり合った。

Fishing boats were heading back into the harbor below, small white shapes trailing thin wakes across a darkening sea, and lights were coming on one by one along the coast road. The smell of woodsmoke drifted up from somewhere near the shore, mixing with the last of the salt air.

大西洋から霧の帯が流れ込んできた。この一週間ずっとそうしてきたように、まず火口を、次に茶畑を、そして港そのものをすべり越えて、島まるごとを彼女の下から包み隠していく。ポリーは前にもこの光景を見ていた。辛抱強く、急がない。まるで島が、一度にではなくゆっくりと消えることを好んでいるかのようだった。

A bank of fog rolled in off the ocean the way it had all week, sliding first over the crater, then the tea fields, then the harbor itself, folding the whole island out of sight beneath her. Polly had watched it do this before, patient and unhurried, as if the island preferred to disappear slowly rather than all at once.

水平線にまだ最後の光が残っているうちに、彼女は外洋へと向かった。あとに残していくのは、いまも地面の下で夕食を煮ている島、いまも一枚ずつていねいに茶を育てている島、そして古い森の奥のどこかで、小さな灰色の鳥を守りつづけている島だった。

She turned out over open water while the last of the light held on the horizon, leaving behind an island still cooking its dinner underground, still growing its tea one careful leaf at a time, and still, somewhere deep in an old forest, keeping a small grey bird safe.
