안개가 그녀의 뒤를 닫는다

마지막 오후, 폴리는 해안 위로 한 번 더 높이 올라갔다. 차밭 위로, 호수 두 개를 품은 분화구 위로, 그리고 월계수 깊은 곳에서 아직 프리올루가 우는 조용한 숲 위로. 그 높이에서 섬은 정확히 그 정체 그대로 보였다. 아직 희미하게 따뜻하고, 아직 천천히 식으며 초록으로 변해 가는 오래된 화산들의 긴 사슬이었다.

On her last afternoon, Polly climbed high above the coast one more time, above the tea terraces, the crater with its two lakes, and the quiet forest where the priolo still calls from deep in the laurel trees. From up there the island looked exactly like what it is: one long chain of old volcanoes, still faintly warm, still slowly cooling into green.

아래 항구로는 고깃배들이 돌아오고 있었다. 어두워지는 바다 위에 가느다란 물자국을 끌고 가는 작고 흰 형체들이었다. 해안 도로를 따라 불빛이 하나씩 켜졌다. 물가 어딘가에서 장작 연기 냄새가 올라와 마지막 남은 짠 바람과 섞였다.

Fishing boats were heading back into the harbor below, small white shapes trailing thin wakes across a darkening sea, and lights were coming on one by one along the coast road. The smell of woodsmoke drifted up from somewhere near the shore, mixing with the last of the salt air.

한 무리의 안개가 그 주 내내 그랬듯 바다에서 밀려와, 먼저 분화구를, 다음에 차밭을, 그다음 항구까지 덮으며 섬 전체를 폴리의 발밑에서 접어 감추었다. 폴리는 안개가 이렇게 하는 것을 전에도 보았다. 서두르지 않고 느긋하게, 마치 섬이 한꺼번에가 아니라 천천히 사라지기를 바라는 것처럼.

A bank of fog rolled in off the ocean the way it had all week, sliding first over the crater, then the tea fields, then the harbor itself, folding the whole island out of sight beneath her. Polly had watched it do this before, patient and unhurried, as if the island preferred to disappear slowly rather than all at once.

폴리는 마지막 빛이 수평선에 남아 있는 동안 열린 바다 쪽으로 방향을 틀었다. 뒤에는 아직 땅속에서 저녁을 익히고, 아직 한 장씩 정성껏 차를 길러내며, 아직 오래된 숲 깊은 곳 어딘가에서 작은 회색 새를 지키고 있는 섬이 남았다.

She turned out over open water while the last of the light held on the horizon, leaving behind an island still cooking its dinner underground, still growing its tea one careful leaf at a time, and still, somewhere deep in an old forest, keeping a small grey bird safe.
