ポリーはコンパートメントで一人だった。パベルはウラン・ウデで降り、兵士は別の車両に移った。上の寝台には新しい乗客がいて、痩せた女性がほとんど一日中眠っていた。
貨物列車が反対方向に通り過ぎた。それはほぼ2キロメートルの長さで、木材を運んでいた。ポリーは38台のフラットカーを数えてからやめた。
列車は午前中にハバロフスクに到着した。ハバロフスクはアムール川に面しており、アムール川は世界で8番目に長い川だ。アムール川はロシアと中国の国境の大部分を形成している。プラットフォームから、ポリーは2つの建物の間の隙間から川を見ることができた。それは広く、濃いお茶の色をしていた。遠くの岸には霞の中に中国があった。
ポリーは列車から降りて、列車の長さを歩いた。
ロシア極東のツルが駅の庭の近くの小さな湿地の端に立っていた。ほぼ2メートルの高さで、黒と白、目の周りに赤があった。ロシア極東のツルは世界で最も珍しいツルの一つで、アムール流域で主に繁殖しているのは約3000羽しか残っていない。
ポリーはそれに頭を傾けた。ツルも頭を傾け返した。ポリーが近づくと、ツルは動かなかった。
車掌が笛を吹いた。ポリーは列車に戻った。振り返ると、ツルはまだ彼女を見ていた。それからツルはゆっくりと長い首を持ち上げ、慎重な足取りで湿地の中へと歩いていった。
列車はハバロフスクを出発し、南へ向かった。太平洋までは700キロメートルもなかった。
