La librería equivocada

Lucas pidió un café y se sentó en la esquina vacía de la cafetería. Sacó su libro e intentó leer. Pero el hombre de la mesa de al lado lo miraba.

Lucas ordered a coffee and sat in the empty corner of the café. He took out his book and tried to read. But the man at the next table was watching him.

—Esa es una edición muy antigua —dijo el hombre. Lucas levantó la vista. El hombre llevaba una chaqueta gruesa, aunque la cafetería estaba caldeada. —Yo vendía libros como ese. A la vuelta de la esquina. La tienda ya no existe.

"That's a very old edition," the man said. Lucas looked up. The man was wearing a heavy jacket, even though the café was warm. "I used to sell books like that one. Around the corner. The shop is gone now."

—¿Ya no existe? —preguntó Lucas. Se sentía incómodo, pero no sabía cómo salir de la conversación. —¿Qué clase de tienda?

"Gone?" Lucas asked. He felt awkward, but he didn't know how to leave the conversation. "What kind of shop?"

El hombre se rió en voz baja. —Libros antiguos. Cuarenta años. Luego vendieron el edificio a un banco. El banco también cerró, hace tres años. Ahora es una tienda de ropa. —Miró por la ventana—. Cada vez que paso por delante, me olvido durante un segundo. Casi entro.

The man laughed quietly. "Old books. Forty years. Then the building was sold to a bank. The bank closed too, three years ago. Now it's a clothing store." He looked out the window. "Every time I pass by, I forget for one second. I almost go inside."

Lucas cerró su libro y escuchó. El hombre no pedía nada. Solo quería contarle a alguien sobre un sitio que antes estuvo allí.

Lucas closed his book and listened. The man did not ask for anything. He just wanted to tell someone about a place that used to be there.
