호주가 에뮤에게 진 전쟁

한때 어느 군대가 새에게 패배한 적이 있다. 일천구백삼십이년 말, 서호주의 밀 농부들은 자신들의 작물이 에뮤, 즉 날지 못하는 커다란 새들의 공격을 받고 있다는 사실을 알게 되었다. 에뮤 수천 마리가 물을 찾아 그 지역으로 몰려들었다가 대신 곡식이 가득한 밭을 발견한 것이었다.

An army once lost to birds. In the closing months of nineteen thirty-two, wheat farmers in Western Australia found their crop under assault from emus, tall flightless birds that had descended on the region in their thousands in search of water and discovered fields of grain instead.

농부들은 정부에 도움을 요청했고, 정부는 기관총 두 정과 실탄 만 발로 무장한 군인들을 파견했다. 서류상으로는 상대가 되지 않는 싸움처럼 보였다. 그러나 실제 들판에서는 상황이 사뭇 다르게 펼쳐졌다. 에뮤는 상당히 빠르게 달리고 날카롭게 방향을 틀며, 멈춰 세우기가 여간 까다롭지 않았다. 첫 사격이 시작되자 무리는 작고 재빠른 여러 집단으로 흩어져 계속 움직였다. 기관총은 거듭 걸려 버렸다. 트럭까지 동원했지만, 지형이 너무 험해서 겨냥하기조차 힘들다는 것이 드러났다.

The farmers appealed to the government, which dispatched soldiers armed with two machine guns and ten thousand rounds of ammunition. On paper it looked like no contest. In the fields, matters unfolded rather differently. Emus run at considerable speed, turn sharply, and require a great deal of stopping, and after the opening bursts of fire the flocks scattered into small, mobile groups and carried on. The guns jammed repeatedly. A truck was pressed into service, only for the terrain to prove far too rough to aim from.

약 한 달 뒤, 군인들은 철수했다. 전체 개체 수의 몇 배에 달했음에도 천 마리도 채 안 되는 새가 죽었을 뿐이었고, 전 세계 신문들은 이 이야기를 신나게 다루었으며, 자신들을 상대로 전쟁이 선포되었다는 사실을 전혀 모르는 에뮤들은 다시 밀을 먹는 일로 돌아갔다.

After roughly a month, the soldiers withdrew. Fewer than a thousand birds had been killed out of a population many times that size, newspapers across the world had an enjoyable time with the story, and the emus, unaware that war had been declared upon them, returned to eating the wheat.
