Marta viveva da sola in un piccolo appartamento. La sua nuova vicina, donna Pilar, era una signora anziana. A volte si incontravano in ascensore, ma non si parlavano.
Una domenica mattina, Marta aprì la porta di casa per andare a fare una passeggiata. C'era un piccolo piatto per terra. Sul piatto c'era un pezzo di torta. La torta profumava di cannella e di arancia.
C'era un bigliettino. «È la ricetta di mia nonna. Ne ho fatta troppa. Benvenuta nel palazzo. — Pilar.»
Marta mangiò la torta al tavolo della cucina. Era la torta più buona che avesse mangiato da molto tempo. Non sapeva come ringraziare Pilar. Non sapeva fare dolci. Non aveva la ricetta di sua nonna.
Alla fine, scrisse un biglietto. «Grazie. La torta era meravigliosa. Se mai ha bisogno di aiuto con la spesa, bussi alla mia porta.» Lasciò il biglietto sotto la porta di Pilar. Adesso avevano qualcosa da cui partire.
