The Wrong Bookshop

Lucas ordered a coffee and sat in the empty corner of the café. He took out his book and tried to read. But the man at the next table was watching him.

Lucas pediu um café e sentou-se no canto vazio do café. Tirou o seu livro e tentou ler. Mas o homem da mesa do lado estava a olhar para ele.

"That's a very old edition," the man said. Lucas looked up. The man was wearing a heavy jacket, even though the café was warm. "I used to sell books like that one. Around the corner. The shop is gone now."

— Essa é uma edição muito antiga — disse o homem. Lucas levantou os olhos. O homem usava um casaco grosso, embora o café estivesse bem aquecido. — Eu vendia livros como esse. Ao virar da esquina. A loja já não existe.

"Gone?" Lucas asked. He felt awkward, but he didn't know how to leave the conversation. "What kind of shop?"

— Já não existe? — perguntou Lucas. Sentia-se incomodado, mas não sabia como sair da conversa. — Que tipo de loja?

The man laughed quietly. "Old books. Forty years. Then the building was sold to a bank. The bank closed too, three years ago. Now it's a clothing store." He looked out the window. "Every time I pass by, I forget for one second. I almost go inside."

O homem riu-se em voz baixa. — Livros antigos. Quarenta anos. Depois venderam o edifício a um banco. O banco também fechou, há três anos. Agora é uma loja de roupa. — Olhou pela janela. — De cada vez que passo à frente, esqueço-me durante um segundo. Quase entro.

Lucas closed his book and listened. The man did not ask for anything. He just wanted to tell someone about a place that used to be there.

Lucas fechou o livro e ouviu. O homem não pedia nada. Só queria contar a alguém sobre um sítio que antes esteve ali.
