The Wrong Bookshop

Lucas ordered a coffee and sat in the empty corner of the café. He took out his book and tried to read. But the man at the next table was watching him.

Lucas ordinò un caffè e si sedette nell'angolo vuoto del bar. Tirò fuori il libro e cercò di leggere. Ma l'uomo al tavolo accanto lo stava guardando.

"That's a very old edition," the man said. Lucas looked up. The man was wearing a heavy jacket, even though the café was warm. "I used to sell books like that one. Around the corner. The shop is gone now."

«È un'edizione molto vecchia», disse l'uomo. Lucas alzò gli occhi. L'uomo indossava una giacca pesante, anche se il bar era ben riscaldato. «Vendevo libri come quello. Dietro l'angolo. Il negozio non c'è più.»

"Gone?" Lucas asked. He felt awkward, but he didn't know how to leave the conversation. "What kind of shop?"

«Non c'è più?», chiese Lucas. Si sentiva a disagio, ma non sapeva come uscire dalla conversazione. «Che tipo di negozio?»

The man laughed quietly. "Old books. Forty years. Then the building was sold to a bank. The bank closed too, three years ago. Now it's a clothing store." He looked out the window. "Every time I pass by, I forget for one second. I almost go inside."

L'uomo rise piano. «Libri antichi. Quarant'anni. Poi hanno venduto l'edificio a una banca. Anche la banca ha chiuso, tre anni fa. Adesso è un negozio di vestiti.» Guardò fuori dalla finestra. «Ogni volta che ci passo davanti, dimentico per un secondo. Quasi entro.»

Lucas closed his book and listened. The man did not ask for anything. He just wanted to tell someone about a place that used to be there.

Lucas chiuse il libro e ascoltò. L'uomo non chiedeva niente. Voleva solo raccontare a qualcuno di un posto che una volta c'era stato.
