The Wrong Bookshop

Lucas ordered a coffee and sat in the empty corner of the café. He took out his book and tried to read. But the man at the next table was watching him.

Lucas a commandé un café et s'est assis dans le coin vide du café. Il a sorti son livre et a essayé de lire. Mais l'homme à la table d'à côté le regardait.

"That's a very old edition," the man said. Lucas looked up. The man was wearing a heavy jacket, even though the café was warm. "I used to sell books like that one. Around the corner. The shop is gone now."

— C'est une édition très ancienne, a dit l'homme. Lucas a levé les yeux. L'homme portait une grosse veste, même si le café était bien chauffé. — Je vendais des livres comme celui-là. Au coin de la rue. La boutique n'existe plus.

"Gone?" Lucas asked. He felt awkward, but he didn't know how to leave the conversation. "What kind of shop?"

— N'existe plus ? a demandé Lucas. Il se sentait mal à l'aise, mais il ne savait pas comment sortir de la conversation. — Quel genre de boutique ?

The man laughed quietly. "Old books. Forty years. Then the building was sold to a bank. The bank closed too, three years ago. Now it's a clothing store." He looked out the window. "Every time I pass by, I forget for one second. I almost go inside."

L'homme a ri doucement. — Livres anciens. Quarante ans. Puis le bâtiment a été vendu à une banque. La banque a fermé aussi, il y a trois ans. Maintenant c'est une boutique de vêtements. — Il a regardé par la fenêtre. — Chaque fois que je passe devant, j'oublie pendant une seconde. J'entre presque.

Lucas closed his book and listened. The man did not ask for anything. He just wanted to tell someone about a place that used to be there.

Lucas a fermé son livre et a écouté. L'homme ne demandait rien. Il voulait juste raconter à quelqu'un un endroit qui avait existé.
