Mara chegou ao mercado noturno às sete horas. A rua estava cheia de luz, vapor e pessoas. Cada barraca vendia uma coisa diferente: macarrão, pastéis, frutas no espeto, chá gelado. Ela estava com fome, mas não sabia por onde começar.
Ela parou em uma barraca com filas longas. Uma mulher cozinhava pastéis em uma grande panela plana. Mara observou os outros clientes. Eles apontavam para o cardápio, diziam um número e pagavam. Quando chegou a sua vez, ela também apontou. "Cinco, por favor", disse ela. A mulher sorriu e balançou a cabeça.
