Mara kwam om zeven uur aan op de avondmarkt. De straat was vol licht, stoom en mensen. Elke kraam verkocht iets anders: noedels, dumplings, fruit op stokjes, koude thee. Ze had honger, maar ze wist niet waar ze moest beginnen.
Ze bleef staan bij een kraam met een lange rij. Een vrouw bakte dumplings in een grote platte pan. Mara keek naar de andere klanten. Ze wezen naar het menu, zeiden een getal en betaalden. Toen zij aan de beurt was, wees ze ook. Vijf, alstublieft, zei ze. De vrouw knikte en glimlachte.
De dumplings waren heet en knapperig aan de onderkant. Mara zat op een klein plastic stoeltje en at ze langzaam op. Daarna liep ze naar de volgende kraam, en de volgende. Die avond leerde ze de belangrijkste regel van streetfood: een lange rij betekent goed eten.
