マラは夜市に7時に到着しました。通りは光と蒸気、人々でいっぱいでした。どの屋台も違うものを売っていました:麺、餃子、串に刺さった果物、冷たいお茶。彼女はお腹が空いていましたが、どこから始めればいいのかわかりませんでした。
彼女は長い列ができている屋台で立ち止まりました。女性が大きな平たい鍋で餃子を焼いていました。マラは他のお客さんを観察しました。彼らはメニューを指さし、数字を言ってお金を払っていました。彼女の番が来たとき、マラも指をさして「5つください」と言いました。女性はうなずいて微笑みました。
餃子は底が熱くてカリカリしていました。マラは小さなプラスチックの椅子に座ってゆっくりと食べました。それから次の屋台へ、また次の屋台へと歩きました。その夜、彼女は屋台料理の最も大切なルールを学びました:長い列は美味しい料理を意味するということです。
