This bank only takes cheese. Send this to whoever thinks banking cannot get stranger. In the hills of northern Italy, a bank keeps a vault holding more than half a million wheels of cheese.

そのチーズはパルミジャーノ・レッジャーノで、持ち主は地元の酪農家です。熟成して売れるまで何年も待つかわりに、農家はチーズの塊をそのまま銀行に担保として預けます。銀行はその価値の大部分を、すぐに支払います。

The cheese is Parmigiano Reggiano, and it belongs to local dairy farmers. Instead of waiting years for the cheese to age and sell, farmers hand their wheels straight to the bank as collateral for a loan, and the bank pays them a large share of the value right away.

融資が続くあいだ、銀行はその塊を自分で保管して熟成させます。一つずつ状態を確かめ、図書館の本のように向きを変えていくのです。チーズがようやく満額で売れると、農家は融資を返し、次の仕込みでまた同じことが始まります。

While the loan runs, the bank stores and ages the wheels itself, checking each one and rotating them like a library of cheese. When the cheese finally sells at full price, the farmer settles the loan, and the whole system starts again with the next harvest.
