Sabato mattina, Ana andò al mercato per la prima volta. Voleva comprare frutta e verdura per la settimana. Il mercato era pieno di gente, di voci e di colori vivaci.
Si fermò a un piccolo banco di pomodori. «Quanto, per favore?», chiese. Il signore anziano dietro al tavolo la guardò. «Per insalata o per sugo?», disse. Ana non sapeva cosa rispondere.
«Per insalata», disse alla fine. L'uomo scosse la testa. Indicò una cassetta. «Questi per insalata. Sodi. Bel colore.» Indicò un'altra cassetta. «Questi per sugo. Molli, molto rossi, dolci.» Sorrise. «Pomodoro diverso, lavoro diverso.»
Ana comprò un chilo da ciascuna cassetta. L'uomo li avvolse con cura nella carta. Le diede un piccolo limone come regalo. «Per la sua insalata», disse.
Quando arrivò a casa, si sedette al tavolo della cucina e guardò la sua borsa. Ebbe la sensazione di aver comprato qualcosa di più dei pomodori.
