A first trip to the local market with a vendor who refuses to let her leave with the wrong tomatoes.

Zaterdagochtend ging Ana voor het eerst naar de markt. Ze wilde fruit en groenten kopen voor de week. De markt was vol mensen, stemmen en felle kleuren.
Ze bleef staan bij een klein tomatenkraampje. „Hoeveel, alstublieft?", vroeg ze. De oude man achter de tafel keek haar aan. „Voor salade of voor saus?", zei hij. Ana wist niet wat ze moest antwoorden.
„Voor salade", zei ze uiteindelijk. De man schudde zijn hoofd. Hij wees naar een kist. „Deze voor salade. Stevig. Mooie kleur." Hij wees naar een andere kist. „Deze voor saus. Zacht, heel rood, zoet." Hij glimlachte. „Andere tomaat, ander werk."
Ana kocht een kilo uit elke kist. De man wikkelde ze zorgvuldig in papier. Hij gaf haar een kleine citroen als cadeau. „Voor uw salade", zei hij.
Toen ze thuiskwam, ging ze aan de keukentafel zitten en keek naar haar tas. Ze had het gevoel meer gekocht te hebben dan alleen tomaten.
