Kilo Mbili za Uvumilivu

Jumamosi asubuhi, Ana alitembea kwenda sokoni kwa mara ya kwanza. Alitaka kununua matunda na mboga za wiki nzima. Soko lilijaa watu, sauti, na rangi za kupendeza.

On Saturday morning, Ana walked to the market for the first time. She wanted to buy fruit and vegetables for the week. The market was full of people, voices, and bright colors.

Alisimama kwenye kibanda kidogo cha nyanya. "Bei gani, tafadhali?" aliuliza. Mzee aliyekuwa nyuma ya meza alimtazama. "Kwa saladi au kwa mchuzi?" alisema. Ana hakujua la kujibu.

She stopped at a small stand with tomatoes. "How much, please?" she asked. The old man behind the table looked at her. "For salad or for sauce?" he said. Ana did not know what to answer.

"Kwa saladi," alisema hatimaye. Mzee alipunga kichwa. Alionyesha sanduku moja. "Hizi ni za saladi. Ngumu. Rangi nzuri." Alionyesha sanduku lingine. "Hizi ni za mchuzi. Laini, nyekundu sana, tamu." Alitabasamu. "Nyanya tofauti, kazi tofauti."

"For salad," she said finally. The man shook his head. He pointed at one box. "These for salad. Firm. Good color." He pointed at another box. "These for sauce. Soft, very red, sweet." He smiled. "Different tomato, different work."

Ana alinunua kilo moja kutoka kila sanduku. Mzee alizifunga kwa uangalifu kwenye karatasi. Alimpa limau ndogo kama zawadi. "Kwa saladi yako," alisema.

Ana bought one kilo from each box. The man wrapped them carefully in paper. He gave her a small lemon as a gift. "For your salad," he said.

Alipofika nyumbani, aliketi mezani jikoni na kutazama mfuko wake. Alihisi kama alikuwa amenunua zaidi ya nyanya tu.

When she got home, she sat at the kitchen table and looked at her bag. She felt like she had bought more than tomatoes.
