Dos kilos de paciencia

El sábado por la mañana, Ana fue al mercado por primera vez. Quería comprar fruta y verdura para la semana. El mercado estaba lleno de gente, de voces y de colores brillantes.

On Saturday morning, Ana walked to the market for the first time. She wanted to buy fruit and vegetables for the week. The market was full of people, voices, and bright colors.

Se paró en un pequeño puesto de tomates. —¿Cuánto, por favor? —preguntó. El señor mayor detrás de la mesa la miró. —¿Para ensalada o para salsa? —dijo. Ana no supo qué responder.

She stopped at a small stand with tomatoes. "How much, please?" she asked. The old man behind the table looked at her. "For salad or for sauce?" he said. Ana did not know what to answer.

—Para ensalada —dijo al final. El hombre negó con la cabeza. Señaló una caja. —Estos para ensalada. Duros. Buen color. —Señaló otra caja—. Estos para salsa. Blandos, muy rojos, dulces. —Sonrió—. Tomate diferente, trabajo diferente.

"For salad," she said finally. The man shook his head. He pointed at one box. "These for salad. Firm. Good color." He pointed at another box. "These for sauce. Soft, very red, sweet." He smiled. "Different tomato, different work."

Ana compró un kilo de cada caja. El hombre los envolvió con cuidado en papel. Le dio un pequeño limón como regalo. —Para su ensalada —dijo.

Ana bought one kilo from each box. The man wrapped them carefully in paper. He gave her a small lemon as a gift. "For your salad," he said.

Cuando llegó a casa, se sentó a la mesa de la cocina y miró su bolsa. Tuvo la sensación de haber comprado más que tomates.

When she got home, she sat at the kitchen table and looked at her bag. She felt like she had bought more than tomatoes.
