Viele Menschen trinken morgens Kaffee, aber nur wenige wissen, woher er kommt. Kaffee wächst auf einer grünen Pflanze mit glänzenden Blättern. Die Pflanze mag warmes Wetter und wächst am besten in der Nähe des Äquators. Man sagt, dass die ersten Kaffeepflanzen vor langer Zeit in Äthiopien in Afrika wuchsen.
Die Pflanze trägt kleine Früchte, die Kirschen genannt werden. Diese Kirschen sind zuerst grün und werden dann langsam leuchtend rot. In jeder roten Kirsche stecken zwei kleine Kerne. Die Menschen pflücken die reifen Kirschen mit der Hand und nehmen die Kerne heraus. Diese Kerne nennen wir Kaffeebohnen.
Danach trocknen die grünen Bohnen viele Tage lang in der Sonne. Dann werden sie mit Hitze geröstet, bis sie dunkelbraun sind und wunderbar duften. Zum Schluss mahlt man die Bohnen und gießt heißes Wasser darüber. Nach einer langen Reise vom Bauernhof ist der Kaffee endlich fertig zum Trinken.
