Am dritten Morgen hielt der Zug in Jekaterinburg.
Galina war in der Nacht gegangen. Pavel schlief noch. Zwei neue Passagiere waren eingestiegen. Ein junger Soldat und ein älterer Mann mit einer Angelkiste.
Jekaterinburg ist die größte Stadt im Ural. Das Uralgebirge trennt Europa von Asien. Sie sind nicht hoch, aber sehr alt. Sie sind 500 Millionen Jahre alt. Sie gehören zu den ältesten Gebirgen der Erde.
Die Transsibirische Eisenbahn überquert hier den Ural. Es gibt einen kleinen Markierungsstein neben den Gleisen. Auf der einen Seite steht EUROPA. Auf der anderen Seite steht ASIEN.
Der neue Passagier mit der Angelkiste öffnete sie. Er legte seine Angelköder auf den Tisch. Er ordnete sie nach Farben.
"Wo angeln Sie?" fragte Polly.
"Am Baikalsee," sagte er. "In drei Tagen. Omul. Der Fisch des Baikalsees. Man findet ihn nirgendwo sonst auf der Welt."
Später fuhr der Zug an der Markierung in einer kleinen Lichtung vorbei. EUROPA auf der einen Seite. ASIEN auf der anderen. Drei Touristen winkten dem Zug zu. Pavel winkte von innen zurück.
Der Zug hatte einen Kontinent überquert, so wie man eine kleine Straße überquert.
