Two Kilos of Patience

On Saturday morning, Ana walked to the market for the first time. She wanted to buy fruit and vegetables for the week. The market was full of people, voices, and bright colors.

W sobotni poranek Ana po raz pierwszy poszła na targ. Chciała kupić owoce i warzywa na cały tydzień. Targ był pełen ludzi, głosów i jaskrawych kolorów.

She stopped at a small stand with tomatoes. "How much, please?" she asked. The old man behind the table looked at her. "For salad or for sauce?" he said. Ana did not know what to answer.

Zatrzymała się przy małym stoisku z pomidorami. "Ile kosztują?" zapytała. Starszy pan za stołem spojrzał na nią. "Do sałatki czy na sos?" powiedział. Ana nie wiedziała, co odpowiedzieć.

"For salad," she said finally. The man shook his head. He pointed at one box. "These for salad. Firm. Good color." He pointed at another box. "These for sauce. Soft, very red, sweet." He smiled. "Different tomato, different work."

"Do sałatki," powiedziała w końcu. Mężczyzna pokiwał głową. Wskazał na jedno pudełko. "Te do sałatki. Twarde. Dobry kolor." Wskazał na inne pudełko. "Te na sos. Miękkie, bardzo czerwone, słodkie." Uśmiechnął się. "Inny pomidor, inna praca."

Ana bought one kilo from each box. The man wrapped them carefully in paper. He gave her a small lemon as a gift. "For your salad," he said.

Ana kupiła po kilogramie z każdego pudełka. Mężczyzna starannie zawinął je w papier. Dał jej małą cytrynę w prezencie. "Do twojej sałatki," powiedział.

When she got home, she sat at the kitchen table and looked at her bag. She felt like she had bought more than tomatoes.

Kiedy wróciła do domu, usiadła przy kuchennym stole i spojrzała na swoją torbę. Czuła, jakby kupiła coś więcej niż tylko pomidory.
