Two Kilos of Patience

On Saturday morning, Ana walked to the market for the first time. She wanted to buy fruit and vegetables for the week. The market was full of people, voices, and bright colors.

土曜日の朝、アナは初めて市場へ歩いて行きました。一週間分の果物と野菜を買いたかったのです。市場は人と声と鮮やかな色でいっぱいでした。

She stopped at a small stand with tomatoes. "How much, please?" she asked. The old man behind the table looked at her. "For salad or for sauce?" he said. Ana did not know what to answer.

アナはトマトのある小さな店で立ち止まりました。「いくらですか？」と尋ねました。テーブルの向こうにいる老人が彼女を見ました。「サラダ用ですか、ソース用ですか？」と言いました。アナは何と答えればよいかわかりませんでした。

"For salad," she said finally. The man shook his head. He pointed at one box. "These for salad. Firm. Good color." He pointed at another box. "These for sauce. Soft, very red, sweet." He smiled. "Different tomato, different work."

「サラダ用です」とアナはついに言いました。男性は首を振りました。彼は一つの箱を指差しました。「これはサラダ用。固くて、色がいい。」別の箱を指差しました。「これはソース用。柔らかくて、とても赤くて、甘い。」彼は微笑みました。「違うトマト、違う使い方。」

Ana bought one kilo from each box. The man wrapped them carefully in paper. He gave her a small lemon as a gift. "For your salad," he said.

アナは両方の箱から1キロずつ買いました。男性はそれらを丁寧に紙で包んでくれました。彼は小さなレモンをプレゼントとしてくれました。「サラダ用に」と言いました。

When she got home, she sat at the kitchen table and looked at her bag. She felt like she had bought more than tomatoes.

家に帰ると、アナは台所のテーブルに座って買い物袋を見ました。トマト以上のものを買ったような気がしました。
