Two Kilos of Patience

On Saturday morning, Ana walked to the market for the first time. She wanted to buy fruit and vegetables for the week. The market was full of people, voices, and bright colors.

Samedi matin, Ana est allée au marché pour la première fois. Elle voulait acheter des fruits et des légumes pour la semaine. Le marché était plein de monde, de voix et de couleurs vives.

She stopped at a small stand with tomatoes. "How much, please?" she asked. The old man behind the table looked at her. "For salad or for sauce?" he said. Ana did not know what to answer.

"For salad," she said finally. The man shook his head. He pointed at one box. "These for salad. Firm. Good color." He pointed at another box. "These for sauce. Soft, very red, sweet." He smiled. "Different tomato, different work."

— Pour la salade, a-t-elle dit finalement. L'homme a secoué la tête. Il a montré une caisse. — Celles-ci pour la salade. Fermes. Belle couleur. — Il a montré une autre caisse. — Celles-ci pour la sauce. Molles, très rouges, sucrées. — Il a souri. — Tomate différente, travail différent.

Ana bought one kilo from each box. The man wrapped them carefully in paper. He gave her a small lemon as a gift. "For your salad," he said.

Ana a acheté un kilo de chaque caisse. L'homme les a enveloppées soigneusement dans du papier. Il lui a donné un petit citron en cadeau. — Pour votre salade, a-t-il dit.

When she got home, she sat at the kitchen table and looked at her bag. She felt like she had bought more than tomatoes.

En rentrant chez elle, elle s'est assise à la table de la cuisine et a regardé son sac. Elle avait l'impression d'avoir acheté bien plus que des tomates.
