Dinner Buried at Dawn

Near a small lake, Polly saw big pots next to deep holes. A cook put a pot into each hole with a rope. Polly watched.

Junto a uma pequena lagoa, Polly viu panelas grandes ao lado de buracos fundos. Um cozinheiro pôs uma panela em cada buraco com uma corda. Polly ficou a ver.

Each pot had meat and vegetables inside. The ground under it is hot from the volcano. There is no fire. Only the earth's heat cooks the food.

Cada panela tinha carne e legumes dentro. O chão por baixo é quente por causa do vulcão. Não há fogo. Só o calor da terra cozinha a comida.

The pots stay in the ground for six or seven hours. People go for a walk while they wait. Then they come back for dinner.

As panelas ficam no chão seis ou sete horas. As pessoas vão passear enquanto esperam. Depois voltam para jantar.

Steam came out when the first pot opened. It smelled very good. Polly watched the cook carry it away happily.
