Middagen som grävs ner i gryningen

Vid en liten sjö såg Polly stora grytor bredvid djupa hål. En kock satte ner en gryta i varje hål med ett rep. Polly tittade på.

Near a small lake, Polly saw big pots next to deep holes. A cook put a pot into each hole with a rope. Polly watched.

I varje gryta fanns kött och grönsaker. Marken under är het från vulkanen. Det finns ingen eld. Bara jordens värme lagar maten.

Each pot had meat and vegetables inside. The ground under it is hot from the volcano. There is no fire. Only the earth's heat cooks the food.

Grytorna står i marken i sex eller sju timmar. Folk går på promenad medan de väntar. Sedan kommer de tillbaka och äter middag.

The pots stay in the ground for six or seven hours. People go for a walk while they wait. Then they come back for dinner.

Ånga kom ut när den första grytan öppnades. Det luktade mycket gott. Polly såg kocken bära bort den, glad och stolt.
