عشاء يُدفن عند الفجر

قرب بحيرة صغيرة، رأت بولي قدوراً كبيرة بجانب حفر عميقة. وضع طاهٍ قدراً في كل حفرة بحبل. راقبت بولي.

Near a small lake, Polly saw big pots next to deep holes. A cook put a pot into each hole with a rope. Polly watched.

في كل قدر لحم وخضار. الأرض تحته حارّة من البركان. لا توجد نار. حرارة الأرض وحدها تطبخ الطعام.

Each pot had meat and vegetables inside. The ground under it is hot from the volcano. There is no fire. Only the earth's heat cooks the food.

تبقى القدور في الأرض ست أو سبع ساعات. يذهب الناس للمشي بينما ينتظرون. ثم يعودون للعشاء.

The pots stay in the ground for six or seven hours. People go for a walk while they wait. Then they come back for dinner.

خرج البخار حين فُتح القدر الأول. كانت رائحته طيبة جداً. راقبت بولي الطاهي يحمله بعيداً بسعادة.

Steam came out when the first pot opened. It smelled very good. Polly watched the cook carry it away happily.
