Crossing the Urals

On the third morning, the train stopped at Yekaterinburg.

Na terceira manhã, o trem parou em Ecaterimburgo.

Galina had left in the night. Pavel was still asleep. Two new passengers had come on. A young soldier and an older man with a fishing tackle box.

Galina tinha partido durante a noite. Pavel ainda estava dormindo. Dois novos passageiros haviam embarcado. Um jovem soldado e um homem mais velho com uma caixa de apetrechos de pesca.

Yekaterinburg is the biggest city in the Urals. The Ural Mountains divide Europe from Asia. They are not tall, but they are very old. They are 500 million years old. They are some of the oldest mountains on Earth.

Ecaterimburgo é a maior cidade nos Urais. As Montanhas Urais dividem a Europa da Ásia. Elas não são altas, mas são muito antigas. Têm 500 milhões de anos. São algumas das montanhas mais antigas da Terra.

The Trans-Siberian crosses the Urals here. There is a small marker by the tracks. One side says EUROPE. The other side says ASIA.

O Transiberiano cruza os Urais aqui. Há um pequeno marco ao lado dos trilhos. Um lado diz EUROPA. O outro lado diz ÁSIA.

The new passenger with the tackle box opened it. He laid out his fishing lures on the table. He arranged them by colour.

O novo passageiro com a caixa de apetrechos a abriu. Ele colocou suas iscas de pesca sobre a mesa. Arrumou-as por cor.

"Where do you fish?" Polly asked.

"Onde você pesca?" Polly perguntou.

"Lake Baikal," he said. "In three days. Omul. The fish of Baikal. You will not find it anywhere else in the world."

"No Lago Baikal," ele disse. "Em três dias. Omul. O peixe do Baikal. Você não o encontrará em nenhum outro lugar do mundo."

Later, the train passed the marker in a small clearing. EUROPE on one side. ASIA on the other. Three tourists waved at the train. Pavel waved back from inside.

Mais tarde, o trem passou pelo marco em uma pequena clareira. EUROPA de um lado. ÁSIA do outro. Três turistas acenaram para o trem. Pavel acenou de volta de dentro.

The train had crossed a continent the way you cross a small street.

O trem havia cruzado um continente da mesma forma que se cruza uma pequena rua.
