Crossing the Urals

On the third morning, the train stopped at Yekaterinburg.

Trzeciego ranka pociąg zatrzymał się w Jekaterynburgu.

Galina had left in the night. Pavel was still asleep. Two new passengers had come on. A young soldier and an older man with a fishing tackle box.

Galina opuściła pociąg w nocy. Paweł wciąż spał. Do przedziału dosiadło się dwóch nowych pasażerów. Młody żołnierz i starszy mężczyzna z pudełkiem na sprzęt wędkarski.

Yekaterinburg is the biggest city in the Urals. The Ural Mountains divide Europe from Asia. They are not tall, but they are very old. They are 500 million years old. They are some of the oldest mountains on Earth.

Jekaterynburg to największe miasto na Uralu. Góry Ural dzielą Europę od Azji. Nie są wysokie, ale są bardzo stare. Mają 500 milionów lat. To jedne z najstarszych gór na Ziemi.

The Trans-Siberian crosses the Urals here. There is a small marker by the tracks. One side says EUROPE. The other side says ASIA.

Kolej Transsyberyjska przecina Ural właśnie tutaj. Przy torach stoi mały znak. Z jednej strony napisane jest EUROPA. Z drugiej strony napisane jest AZJA.

The new passenger with the tackle box opened it. He laid out his fishing lures on the table. He arranged them by colour.

Nowy pasażer z pudełkiem na sprzęt wędkarski otworzył je. Rozłożył swoje przynęty na stole. Ułożył je według kolorów.

"Where do you fish?" Polly asked.

"Gdzie pan łowi?" zapytała Polly.

"Lake Baikal," he said. "In three days. Omul. The fish of Baikal. You will not find it anywhere else in the world."

"Nad Bajkałem," odpowiedział. "Za trzy dni. Omul. Ryba Bajkału. Nie znajdziesz jej nigdzie indziej na świecie."

Later, the train passed the marker in a small clearing. EUROPE on one side. ASIA on the other. Three tourists waved at the train. Pavel waved back from inside.

Później pociąg minął znak w małej polanie. EUROPA z jednej strony. AZJA z drugiej. Trzech turystów machało do pociągu. Paweł pomachał im z wnętrza.

The train had crossed a continent the way you cross a small street.

Pociąg przekroczył kontynent tak, jak się przechodzi małą uliczkę.
