Bestel geen latte in Italië. Dit is waarom. Je zit in een prachtig café in Rome. Je bent moe en je wilt koffie. Je zegt het woord latte, want thuis betekent dat koffie met melk. De ober glimlacht en brengt je een glas gewone melk. Geen koffie. Alleen melk. In het Italiaans betekent latte melk. Stuur dit naar een vriend voor zijn reis naar Italië.
Dit zeg je in plaats daarvan. Wil je koffie met melk, vraag dan om een caffè latte. Wil je een kleine sterke koffie, zeg dan gewoon un caffè. Italianen drinken hun melkkoffie in de ochtend, bijna nooit in de middag. Een kleine koffie na het eten is prima, maar die is klein en zwart.
De ober in Rome ziet deze fout elke dag opnieuw. Hij is niet boos. Hij vindt het eigenlijk wel grappig. Hij zet het glas melk op je tafel, wacht even, en vraagt dan vriendelijk: wilt u er misschien ook wat koffie bij? Nu ken je het geheim. Een klein woord maakt het hele verschil.
