ارشف بصوت عالٍ، فهذا من الأدب

في أماكن كثيرة، الرشف بصوت عالٍ قلة أدب. أما في اليابان، فحين تأكل النودلز يكون الرشف من الأدب فعلاً.

In many places, slurping your food loudly is rude. In Japan, when you eat noodles, slurping is actually polite.

ولهذا أسباب وجيهة. الرشف يسحب الهواء مع النودلز، فيبرّد المرق الساخن بسرعة. وهو ينقل أيضاً رائحة أقوى ونكهة أوضح إلى أنفك وأنت تأكل، تماماً كما يشمّ الناس النبيذ قبل تذوقه. بل إن الرشف العالي قد يخبر الطاهي أنك مستمتع بالوجبة.

There are good reasons for this. Slurping pulls in air with the noodles, which cools down hot broth quickly. It also carries more smell and flavor to your nose while you eat, similar to how people sniff wine before tasting it. Loud slurping can even tell the cook that you are enjoying the meal.

بدأت العادة قديماً، حين كانت النودلز أكلاً سريعاً في الشارع ويأكلها الناس واقفين وعلى عجل. في المرة القادمة التي تأكل فيها النودلز في مكان كهذا، جرّبها بنفسك. قليل من الصوت ليس سوء أدب هنا. إنه مجاملة.

The habit started long ago, when noodles were fast street food and people ate quickly while standing. Next time you eat noodles somewhere like this, try it yourself. A little noise is not bad manners here. It is a compliment.
