Un sat legat la un vulcan

Mergând mai târziu prin sat, Polly a văzut abur ieșind din crăpăturile drumului, din canale și dintr-un bazin public mare care strălucea portocaliu în lumina după-amiezii. Aceeași căldură care a gătit prânzul curge pe sub tot satul.

Walking through the village later, Polly saw steam rising from cracks in the road, from drains, and from a big public pool glowing orange in the afternoon light. The same heat that cooked lunch runs under the whole village.

Apa fierbinte umple o baie publică mare din apropiere. Un bazin mare rămâne cald tot anul, fără pompă și fără boiler. Băi mai mici din sat folosesc aceeași apă. Fierul din apă îi dă o culoare portocalie intensă.

That hot water fills a large public bath nearby. A big pool stays warm all year with no pump or boiler needed. Smaller bathhouses around the village use the same water. Iron in the water turns it a deep orange color.

Unele case folosesc căldura din subteran chiar pentru apa lor caldă, fără niciun boiler. Polly și-a dat seama că tot satul funcționează pe vulcanul care doarme sub el: gătește mâncare, încălzește băi și case, fără foc și fără combustibil.

Some homes even use the underground heat for their own hot water, with no water heater needed. Polly realized the whole village runs on the volcano sleeping beneath it: cooking food, warming baths, and heating homes, with no fire and no fuel.

S-a așezat pe marginea bazinului portocaliu și i-a simțit căldura. Un loc construit chiar peste atâta căldură găsise un mod isteț de a o folosi.

She sat by the edge of the big orange pool and felt its warmth. A place built right on top of so much heat had found a clever way to use it.
