화산에 연결된 마을

나중에 마을을 걷다가 폴리는 길의 갈라진 틈과 배수구에서, 그리고 오후 햇빛에 주황빛으로 빛나는 큰 공공 수영장에서 김이 올라오는 것을 보았다. 점심을 익힌 그 열이 마을 전체 아래를 흐른다.

Walking through the village later, Polly saw steam rising from cracks in the road, from drains, and from a big public pool glowing orange in the afternoon light. The same heat that cooked lunch runs under the whole village.

그 뜨거운 물이 근처의 큰 공중 목욕탕을 채운다. 커다란 탕은 펌프나 보일러 없이 일 년 내내 따뜻하다. 마을의 작은 목욕탕들도 같은 물을 쓴다. 물속의 철분이 물을 짙은 주황색으로 만든다.

That hot water fills a large public bath nearby. A big pool stays warm all year with no pump or boiler needed. Smaller bathhouses around the village use the same water. Iron in the water turns it a deep orange color.

어떤 집은 이 땅속 열을 온수로 그대로 쓴다. 온수기가 필요 없다. 폴리는 마을 전체가 아래에서 잠든 화산으로 돌아간다는 것을 깨달았다. 음식을 익히고, 목욕물을 데우고, 집을 덥히는 데 불도 연료도 필요 없다.

Some homes even use the underground heat for their own hot water, with no water heater needed. Polly realized the whole village runs on the volcano sleeping beneath it: cooking food, warming baths, and heating homes, with no fire and no fuel.

폴리는 큰 주황빛 탕 옆에 앉아 온기를 느꼈다. 이렇게 많은 열 위에 세워진 곳이, 그 열을 쓰는 영리한 방법을 찾아냈다.

She sat by the edge of the big orange pool and felt its warmth. A place built right on top of so much heat had found a clever way to use it.
