Uma Aldeia Ligada a um Vulcão

Ao atravessar a aldeia mais tarde, Polly viu vapor a sair de fendas na estrada, das sarjetas e de uma grande piscina pública que brilhava cor de laranja à luz da tarde. O mesmo calor que cozinhou o almoço corre por baixo de toda a aldeia.

Walking through the village later, Polly saw steam rising from cracks in the road, from drains, and from a big public pool glowing orange in the afternoon light. The same heat that cooked lunch runs under the whole village.

Essa água quente enche um grande balneário ali perto. Um tanque grande fica quente o ano inteiro sem bomba nem caldeira. Os balneários mais pequenos da aldeia usam a mesma água. O ferro na água dá-lhe uma cor laranja intensa.

That hot water fills a large public bath nearby. A big pool stays warm all year with no pump or boiler needed. Smaller bathhouses around the village use the same water. Iron in the water turns it a deep orange color.

Algumas casas usam até o calor subterrâneo para a sua própria água quente, sem precisarem de esquentador. Polly percebeu que a aldeia inteira funciona com o vulcão que dorme por baixo dela: cozinha comida, aquece banhos e aquece casas, sem fogo e sem combustível.

Some homes even use the underground heat for their own hot water, with no water heater needed. Polly realized the whole village runs on the volcano sleeping beneath it: cooking food, warming baths, and heating homes, with no fire and no fuel.

Sentou-se à beira do grande tanque cor de laranja e sentiu o calor. Um lugar construído mesmo por cima de tanto calor tinha encontrado uma forma inteligente de o usar.

She sat by the edge of the big orange pool and felt its warmth. A place built right on top of so much heat had found a clever way to use it.
