하나의 분화구, 두 가지 색

섬 안쪽 높은 하늘에서 폴리는 거대한 분화구 하나를 내려다보았다. 이만 이천 년이 넘은 이 분화구는 테두리 안에 작은 마을 하나와 호수 두 개, 농장 몇 곳까지 품을 만큼 넓었다. 가운데를 가느다란 땅줄기가 가로질렀고, 그 양쪽의 물빛은 완전히 달랐다. 한쪽 호수는 짙은 파랑, 다른 쪽은 선명한 초록이었다. 누군가 서로 다른 두 바다를 같은 그릇에 부어 놓은 것 같았다.

From high above the interior, Polly looked down into a single enormous crater, more than twenty-two thousand years old and wide enough to hold a small town, two lakes, and several farms inside its rim. A thin strip of land crossed the middle, and on either side of it the water was a completely different color, one lake a deep blue, the other a vivid green, as if someone had poured two different oceans into the same bowl.

두 호수는 사실 나뉘어 있지 않다. 땅줄기 아래의 좁은 물길이 둘을 잇고 있어서, 물 자체는 하나의 몸이다. 다른 것은 그 주변의 모든 것이다. 파란 호수는 더 깊어서 열린 하늘을 그대로 비춘다. 초록 호수는 식물이 덮인 비탈과 아주 작은 조류 가까이에 놓여 있고, 그 둘이 물빛을 짙은 초록으로 물들인다.

The two lakes are not really separate. A narrow channel under the land bridge connects them, so the water itself is one body. What changes is everything around it. The blue lake is deeper and simply reflects the open sky, while the green lake sits closer to plant-covered slopes and tiny algae, both of which tint its water a rich green instead.

폴리는 두 빛깔을 가르는 땅줄기를 따라 낮게 날았다. 한쪽 물가에 쉬고 있는 고깃배들과, 다른 쪽 낮은 언덕에서 풀을 뜯는 소들이 보일 만큼 가까웠다. 두꺼운 안개가 바다에서 밀려와 분화구 테두리 안에 내려앉았고, 먼저 초록 호수를, 그다음 파란 호수를 감추어, 마침내 둘 사이의 땅줄기만 남았다.

Polly flew low along the land bridge that splits the two colors, close enough to see fishing boats resting on one shore and grazing cattle on the low hills above the other. Thick fog rolled in off the ocean and settled inside the crater rim, hiding first the green lake, then the blue, until only the bridge between them stayed visible.

폴리는 전망대의 오래된 돌담에 앉아 안개가 다시 걷히기를 조금도 서두르지 않고 기다렸다. 안개가 마침내 옅어지자 두 호수는 동시에 다시 나타났다. 파랑과 초록, 폴리가 두고 온 그 자리에 그대로였다.

She perched on the old stone wall of a lookout point and waited for the fog to lift again, in no hurry at all. When it finally thinned, both lakes reappeared at once, blue and green, exactly where she had left them.
