È appena passato mezzogiorno e la strada si è fatta silenziosa. Le saracinesche sono mezze abbassate. L'ufficio che cercavi è chiuso, e il piccolo ristorante accanto è improvvisamente pieno.
Nella Repubblica Dominicana il pranzo è il vero pasto della giornata, non la cena. Il piatto che arriva è riso bianco, con fagioli rossi stufati versati sopra, e un pezzo di carne, di solito pollo, con un po' di insalata a lato e platano verde fritto se sei fortunato. Si chiama la bandera, che significa la bandiera, perché i colori nel piatto sono i colori del paese. La gente lo mangia quasi tutti i giorni della settimana e non se ne stanca mai.
