Steam and Small Plates

Mara arrived at the night market at seven. The street was full of light, steam, and people. Every stand sold something different: noodles, dumplings, fruit on sticks, cold tea. She was hungry, but she did not know where to start.

Mara est arrivée au marché nocturne à sept heures. La rue était pleine de lumière, de vapeur et de gens. Chaque stand vendait quelque chose de différent : des nouilles, des raviolis, des fruits sur des bâtons, du thé froid. Elle avait faim, mais elle ne savait pas par où commencer.

She stopped at a stand with long lines. A woman cooked dumplings in a big flat pan. Mara watched the other customers. They pointed at the menu, said a number, and paid. When it was her turn, she pointed too. "Five, please," she said. The woman nodded and smiled.

Elle s'est arrêtée à un stand avec de longues files d'attente. Une femme cuisinait des raviolis dans une grande poêle plate. Mara a observé les autres clients. Ils pointaient le menu, disaient un chiffre et payaient. Quand ce fut son tour, elle a pointé aussi. "Cinq, s'il vous plaît," a-t-elle dit. La femme a hoché la tête et souri.

The dumplings were hot and crispy on the bottom. Mara sat on a small plastic chair and ate them slowly. Then she walked to the next stand, and the next. That night she learned the most important rule of street food: a long line means good food.

Les raviolis étaient chauds et croustillants en dessous. Mara s'est assise sur une petite chaise en plastique et les a mangés lentement. Ensuite, elle est allée au stand suivant, puis au suivant. Cette nuit-là, elle a appris la règle la plus importante de la nourriture de rue : une longue file signifie de la bonne nourriture.
