O comboio saiu de Madrid às seis da manhã. Metade dos lugares estavam vazios. Elena escolheu um lugar à janela e viu a cidade dar lugar a campos secos e abertos.
Uma mulher sentou-se à sua frente. Era idosa — talvez sessenta anos, talvez mais — e levava um pequeno saco com uma sanduíche embrulhada em papel de alumínio. Em breve o telefone dela tocou. Atendeu em voz baixa, mas o comboio também estava muito silencioso.
— Não, ainda não lhe disse — sussurrou a mulher. — Vou dizer, mas hoje não. Hoje só a quero ver. — Uma pausa. — Ela não sabe que estou doente. Por favor, tu também não lhe digas.
Elena olhou pela janela e fingiu não ouvir. Mas não conseguia parar de escutar. A mulher falou mais alguns minutos, desligou e comeu a sanduíche devagar.
Quando o comboio chegou a Granada, a mulher levantou-se e olhou para Elena. — Vou ver a minha neta — disse, como se estivesse a explicar algo que Elena já tivesse perguntado. — Há um ano que não a vejo. Boa viagem.
Elena viu-a caminhar pela plataforma e desaparecer entre a multidão.
