Der Zug fuhr um sechs Uhr morgens aus Madrid ab. Die Hälfte der Sitze war leer. Elena wählte einen Fensterplatz und sah zu, wie die Stadt trockenen, weiten Feldern Platz machte.
Eine Frau setzte sich ihr gegenüber. Sie war älter — vielleicht sechzig, vielleicht mehr — und hatte eine kleine Tasche mit einem in Alufolie gewickelten Brot. Bald klingelte ihr Telefon. Sie nahm leise ab, aber der Zug war ebenfalls sehr still.
„Nein, ich habe es ihr noch nicht gesagt", flüsterte die Frau. „Ich werde es tun, aber nicht heute. Heute will ich sie nur sehen." Eine Pause. „Sie weiß nicht, dass ich krank bin. Bitte sag du es ihr auch nicht."
Elena schaute aus dem Fenster und tat so, als würde sie nichts hören. Aber sie konnte nicht aufhören zuzuhören. Die Frau sprach noch ein paar Minuten, legte auf und aß ihr Brot langsam.
Als der Zug in Granada ankam, stand die Frau auf und sah Elena an. „Ich besuche meine Enkelin", sagte sie, als würde sie etwas erklären, das Elena bereits gefragt hätte. „Ich habe sie ein Jahr lang nicht gesehen. Gute Reise."
Elena sah ihr nach, wie sie über den Bahnsteig ging und in der Menge verschwand.
