El tren salió de Madrid a las seis de la mañana. La mitad de los asientos estaban vacíos. Elena eligió un asiento junto a la ventana y miró cómo la ciudad daba paso a campos secos y abiertos.
Una mujer se sentó frente a ella. Era mayor —quizás sesenta años, quizás más— y llevaba una pequeña bolsa con un bocadillo envuelto en papel de aluminio. Pronto le sonó el teléfono. Contestó en voz baja, pero el tren también estaba muy silencioso.
—No, todavía no se lo he dicho —susurró la mujer—. Lo haré, pero hoy no. Hoy solo quiero verla. —Una pausa—. Ella no sabe que estoy enferma. Por favor, tú tampoco se lo digas.
Elena miró por la ventana y fingió no oír. Pero no podía dejar de escuchar. La mujer habló unos minutos más, colgó y se comió el bocadillo despacio.
Cuando el tren llegó a Granada, la mujer se levantó y miró a Elena. —Voy a ver a mi nieta —dijo, como si explicara algo que Elena ya hubiera preguntado—. Hace un año que no la veo. Buen viaje.
Elena la vio caminar por el andén y desaparecer entre la gente.
